Hey Mr Khrushchev,
I liked your speech on Stalin
the way you handled the questions
but one thing I must ask you
what did we learn
what did we learn
we die alone
what did we learn?
Sputnik 1 was cool
it burned up fast and bright
my ending was occluded
not looking back is my talent
what did we learn
what did we learn
we die alone
what did we learn?
You think it took you to make me famous
I would have made it good whatever
sometimes the depths of space is the only place
where we can feel together
Did I ask you to take me from the streets and save me
so you could lie to yourself and to posterity
did I ask to be your experiment
to find out what we could live through?
what did we learn,
what did we learn
we die alone
what did we learn?
You think it was you who made me famous
I would have made it good whatever
sometimes the loneliest place is the only space
where you can feel together
Hold your breath
ask your body
in total darkness,
in a small room, quietly,
to take courage
embrace your failing days
and carry on
never coming back to you
never coming back to you
never coming back to you
never coming back to you

They Also Shoot Dogs

Stop polishing your heart
while reprisals are on the loose
this plague won’t just depart
surprise them from behind with a noose
dig the pit deep; pile the cart high
your chafed hands are now buzzing with flies
The urges of the entitled, so lacklustre
tarnish your shining, polished heart
you pile your regrets as high as the cart
because you know a dog won’t forget you, or the slander
that robs you of your days by prophylactic measure
it robs you of your days, this frightened massacre
Greyhounds and mastiffs, bloodhounds and spaniels
turnspit dogs and kitchen dogs, beagles and pointers
because the dogs are everywhere, so the dogs must be to blame
and there’s no other way to explain
they also shoot dogs
A hot wind is blowing in
The figure-flingers prognosticate
everyone is explaining
and I am disconsolate
a poodle, Talbot hound, a welsh wolfhound
a blue paul terrier
was self-preservation ever deadlier?
The sixty-five massacre
it’s us versus them
and it must make you wonder
if it’s simply this year
or something more sinister
and when the flames rush in
will you be any wiser
or any more alive
Greyhounds and mastiffs, bloodhounds and spaniels
turnspit dogs and kitchen dogs, beagles and pointers
because the dogs are everywhere, and so the dogs must be to blame
and there’s no other way to explain
they also shoot dogs
Stop polishing your heart
while reprisals are unleashed
you’re still breathing, at least
a braque du puy lies there, a chien gris dies there, the cart tips
a north country beagle into the pit
take heart, take heart, it’s too late now to come apart
